Family relationships, which are constantly evolving, still reveal a lack of studies on marital dissolution in families that have adopted a child, highlighting the need to expand research on the reorganization of parental roles following separation and to further deepen investigations into family, adoption, and parenthood. The present qualitative study sought to investigate how five separated couples (ten participants), heterosexual and homosexual, who separated within five years following the adoption, managed their parental roles following the dissolution of their relationship. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed changes in the family dynamics before and after divorce, primarily related to the former couple’s difficulties in managing differences associated with their conjugal and parental relationships. Communication impasses made it difficult to manage healthy parenting, resulting in an overload of maternal functions and the absence of paternal functions, highlighting the importance of preparation of applicants for adoption and programs to guide parents after divorce.
