This study aimed to conduct a literature review encompassing empirical studies that investigated the associations between social skills and the occurrence of suicidal ideation in adolescents up to the year 2020. The SciELO, LILACS, PUBMED, PsycINFO, and ScienceDirect databases were searched using the keywords: social skills, suicidal ideation, and adolescents. A previous selection, based on titles and abstracts, identified 91 potentially eligible articles. After two judges applied the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 14 articles were selected for full reading and analysis in this study. The results indicated that higher levels of social skills, balanced empathy, family, school, and peer support, as well as active coping strategies and good emotional regulation, are associated with lower suicidal ideation. In contrast, the absence of close friends, peer rejection, loneliness, difficulties in emotional expression, and excessive empathy are related to a higher risk of suicidal ideation in adolescents. The study contributes to the advancement of knowledge on protective and risk factors related to suicidal ideation in adolescents, providing support for preventive interventions and programs aimed at developing social skills in this group.
